When did people start calling Tony Stewart "Smoke" and why?

I haven't watched Nascar in a while (at least 3 years), but I was a fan of Tony Stewart. I recently read an article that referred to him (multiple times) as "Smoke". Why?
Also, I watched a video and Tony was in a Red #14 car with Office Depot as a sponsor? Man i missed a lot

He used to slip the right rear tire, earned the nickname "Smoker" it was shortened to Smoke. Not 100% sure ‘when’ he got it.

The #14 is new this season, he just started his own team, Stewart/Haas racing with him and Ryan Newman.
